Balaam: Desperate Times

What makes Balaam so intriguing is he’s a complex/confusing figure, a prophet of contradictions; he’s man who hears from God, speaks for God, is used by God, and who communicates some of the most wonderful prophetic truths in all of Scripture. But at the same time, he’s described as a false and deceitful prophet, a hireling, a man who operated by such evil motives that the NT warns us to avoid his error and his ways. Before we get to Balaam we’ll need to get a “lay of the land” and see how Balak, the king of Moab, saw Israel’s arrival as desperate times that called for desperate measures.
